[Life Hacks] "Is Premium Gas Really Better?" 3 Misconceptions Drivers Get Wrong

Hello, fellow drivers! How much time do you spend behind the wheel every day? 🚗

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Americans spend an average of nearly an hour a day driving. Whether it's a daily commute or a weekend road trip, we spend a significant amount of time in our cars.

With so much time spent driving, it’s only natural that we pick up various pieces of automotive advice. However, did you know that some of the car myths we firmly believe in
actually cause us to waste money or get angry at others for no reason?

Here are 3 widely believed driving myths that scientific research and studies have proven to be false!

1. "Premium gasoline is always better for your car?" ❌

When pulling into a gas station, you might have wondered whether you should fill up with regular or premium. Many believe that premium gas improves fuel economy, boosts engine performance, and reduces emissions.

To cut straight to the chase: "For the vast majority of vehicles, premium gasoline is completely unnecessary."

  • Engines are designed for specific octane ratings: Most passenger cars are built to run on regular fuel. Only sports cars and certain luxury vehicles actually require high-octane gasoline. While putting higher-octane fuel in a regular car won't hurt it, it provides absolutely no benefit.

  • The actual test results: The American Automobile Association (AAA) tested different fuel types in the same vehicles. The results showed no consistent improvement in horsepower or fuel economy, and no change in emissions. The only real difference was the price of the fuel.

  • What should you put in your car? Unless there is a specific high-octane warning sticker inside your fuel door or it is explicitly required in your owner's manual, simply stick to regular gasoline.

2. "You should merge as early as possible when a lane closes?" ❌

When drivers see a sign indicating a lane closure ahead due to construction, many well-behaved drivers try to move over into the open lane as quickly as possible. They might even get angry at drivers who merge late, labeling them as "cutters" or trying to block them.

However, scientific research shows the exact opposite: "Merging at the very last moment—right at the bottleneck—is actually better for everyone."

  • Early merging slows down traffic: According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, slowing down too early to change lanes upon seeing a sign actually causes unexpected, dangerous lane changes, severe crashes, and road rage.

  • The power of the "Zipper Merge": Studies by the University of Nebraska and North Carolina State University show that when drivers stay in their respective lanes until the very end and then take turns merging one by one like a closing zipper, traffic flows much faster and safety increases significantly.

  • When everyone utilizes their full lane up to the merge point, the overall capacity of the road increases, helping everyone get home faster. There’s absolutely no need to glare at late-merging cars!

3. "Manual transmission cars are much more fuel-efficient than automatics?" ❌

The old saying that "stick shifts save gas" used to be an absolute fact. For highly skilled drivers, it might still hold some truth today.

However, overall, the fuel economy gap between modern automatic and manual vehicles has practically vanished.

  • The massive leap in automatic technology: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) officially stated, "With advanced technology improving the efficiency of automatic transmissions, automatic vehicles often get the same or even better fuel economy than manual ones."

  • If you compare manual and automatic versions of the same model on the official fuel economy website (FuelEconomy.gov) run by the EPA, you will see that the performance gap is minimal. In fact, manual models are becoming so rare today that this debate is losing its relevance entirely.
